Almost three million Kenyans were affected by the ongoing drought between January and April 2017. The wells were dry and empty, and if there even was a miserable trickle in a riverbed, the water was not edible, if not poisonous.
 

 
When we completed our project visit to Bungoma in September 2016, the world was still in order:
( möglich , wie wärs mit everthing looked just fine ) the vegetable patches were laid out fresh, it rained vigorously at least once a day, the newly created well had water. Only 5 months later there was nothing left. As far as they could, people helped themselves, but at some point none of the dug wells carried water anymore.
 

At about 4 kilometers from Bungoma there is a "humanitarian" well, but even there the water is rationed. People come with plastic containers and get 10 liters per family per day. Children and elderly or sick people are hardly able to carry the water home over this distance.
 

What we were able to do at the moment was a couple of preliminary measures, such as transporting water to the families of children that are connected to our project , providing food for some exceedingly needy families.
 

Nevertheless: The next drought disaster is sure to come. Our goal is to build another humanitarian deep well on a safe terrain before then. It probably has to reach over 100 meters deep to avoid drying up even in a prolonged drought.
 
 

Project status

2017: Administrative visits and permits
The cost of the project - about 18,000 € - was covered by an overwhelming willingness to donate, so that we can concentrate on the implementation. During our visit on Easter 2017, we were able to select a suitable plot ( ich fände lot besser - das ist glaub ich ein American/British Englisch unterschied) and commission an engineer with the construction work - and more importantly, with the bureaucracy of approval.


To be taken in:
• a hydrogeological report by a certified geologist
• approval by the Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA)
• the environmental compatibility through the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA)
• a license from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)
• a declaration of clearance by the district government (hydraulic engineering)
 
 
 
2018: Start of construction:
We are making good progress with the well project.
The geological surveyor took measurements of the whole area for a whole day and found water at a depth of 60 meters in a sufficient amount for a well. The fact that the planned space for the Tiefbrunnen mt Einhausung at the other end of the area is not desired, but not to change.
 While inspecting every corner of our territory for a whole day, the geological surveyor finally found a spot where there is water in the depths 60 meters, sufficiently close to the surface to built a deep well.

2018: Start of construction:

It is progressing well with the well project.

The geological surveyor took measurements of the whole area for a whole day and found water at a depth of 60 meters in a sufficient amount for a well. The fact that the planned space for the Tiefbrunnen mt Einhausung at the other end of the area is not desired, but not to change.

 We now get the electricity directly from the transformer station on our property. For this purpose, a small "Powerhouse" is built, in which the electricity supplier can install his connections. It should be finished in April 2018



After the operation of a deep well requires a power supply, the connection to the public power grid was a big (or costly) issue: The envisaged power pylon on a neighboring property turned out to be illegal after a meeting with the chief engineer of the local electricity supplier and also for a transfer to our property unsuitable.
